If you’re a sexual person on the internet, you’ve probably run across the term ‘Tantra’ a time or two.

For a lot of us oversexed Westerners, Tantra looks like a real good time for all! Tons of sex, getting really into an altered state of consciousness through any means necessary, and multiple hours long orgasms? What’s not to like?! The thing to be careful about when you’re trying to get started in a Tantric practice is that a lot of what’s billed as super erotic Tantra isn’t authentic actual Tantra. Before you throw up your hands in despair, let me reassure you that authentic Tantra is a lot of fun, and, yes, there’s a lot of erotic stuff in the real deal. (Just probably not as many orgasms as you were hoping for…)

What is Tantra, anyway?

erotic tantra 800 356 6169 Tantra is a system of practices designed to help an individual become enlightened. It has roots going back ~7,000 years, in Northern India. Tantra’s origins as a coherent system of practice can be traced to Hinduism, and then later, in Tibetan Buddhism, or Vajrayana. Tantra includes practices such as meditation, the chanting of mantras, ritual sacrifice, and spiritual rituals. Erotic Tantra is a subsection of Tantra, and unlike other aesthetic traditions in both Hinduism and Buddhism, it embraces physicality and the body. Where some orthodox traditions eschew the body as ‘dirty’ or unclean, Tantra embraces the needs of the flesh and seeks to use those needs and drives to help the individual become enlightened.

Where do modern practitioners of Tantra go wrong?

If you decide to take up the practice of Tantra in hopes of getting a really good orgasm,  learning how to last longer in bed, or just for kicks to see if you can manage to cum on your own face, you’re going to be shortchanging yourself  a whole lot. Tantra is a complete system aimed at helping an individual live a happy and healthy life. It can encompass all of your daily life, from washing dishes to cleaning the floor, and, yes, erotic things you enjoy, too. The beauty of erotic Tantra is that it can bring that erotic energy to literally everything you do throughout the day. The general awareness of yourself as a mind embodied in flesh, feeling, living, breathing, and finding pleasure in every moment, THAT is the blessing that Tantra can give you. A five hour long masturbation session isn’t the end goal of Tantra; being whole and alive in every moment is the end goal. Tantra isn’t just for fucking or sex, and it isn’t just a toy to play with when you’re bored.
