A good, high quality toy is one of the best investments you’ll ever make.
As humans, play is one of our basic drives. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs may not explicitly place ‘play’ as a need, but it is deeply implied. When we act to meet our need for close intimate bonds and self esteem, as well as exercise our creativity, toys and play come into, well, play. We use tools to meet our needs, and for some of our needs to be met, we must use toys. To secure our own best happiness it behooves us to invest in good toys.
Sex toys can create amazing sexual pleasure.
As soon as human beings figured out that touching ourselves ‘down there’ felt good, we picked up tools in an attempt to maximize our good feelings. Anthropologists have found items that may very well be primitive sex toys. The invention of the vibrator in the Victorian Era opened up a whole new world for sexual pleasure. From these humble beginnings, we’ve certainly branched out a lot.
Not all sex toys are created equal, however.
One of the common materials used to create modern sex toys is a jelly like substance called PVC, or polyvinyl chloride. Fantastic for buildings, not so good for inserting into human bodies. PVC can off-gas harmful petrochemicals that increase the chances you could wind up with cancer or other prostrate problems (and women can wind up with cervical or ovarian cancers, too.) It’s common and ubiquitous, and hard to avoid, therefore, if you want to use a PVC or jelly dildo, please put a condom onto it before every use, and don’t leave it inserted for extended lengths of time.
If you want to play with insertable sex toys, go for the good stuff.
Silicone. High quality silicone sex toys are the current go to recommendation for sex health educators and professionals. I’ve found a company that I’m utterly in love with, and have put a couple of their toys in my wishlist. I even ordered one of their dildos and a buttplug, which should be arriving for me on Tuesday! Solid silicone can be boiled, run through an autoclave, you can put it in your dishwasher and you can feel very safe using a sex toy made from it. When in doubt, get silicone. You can safely sterilize silicone toys, which makes them perfect for sharing! They don’t out-gas, they’re stable, they’re sexy. The companies who specialize in silicone sex toys are fantastic. I own the Share, from Fun-Factory, a silicone double ended dildo, and I’ll be getting the VIP from Tantus. All the other dildos I used to own are getting tossed, because they can’t be completely sterilized and are made of questionable materials. (Which means if you want to be my friend forever, you can check out my wishlist and get me a couple of those dildos I just put on there! I need the Silk in all three sizes, to replace what’s going to the dump.)
In order to keep yourself mentally happy and physically satisfied, invest in high quality sex toys.
Don’t go for the cheap ones, get the good stuff and take care of them. Those toys will take care of you for years to come!
Hell yes! I can’t stress enough the importance of quality sex toys. It’s sad that we live in a country that doesn’t care about the quality of the products that we masturbate and have sex with. The European Union regulates sex toys…Fun Factory, BS is Nice, and several other European toy makers are all ridiculously high quality and are *gasp* made of products that won’t give you chemical burn or possibly cause cancer. I’m waiting for the US to catch up. (Though there are several companies that have their shit together and only made body safe toys, like Tantus, Vixen Creations, Crystal Delights, and Happy Valley.)
It was when I realized that the weird itchy feeling after using one of my toys was because the company that made it lied about what it was made of that I switched all my toys to much higher quality materials. So many dildos tossed in the trash! I was tempted, I tell no lie, to make a dildo mobile out them tho…
I am so in love with my new Tantus toys! They’ve joined my Share in a place of special honor in my heart. <3
Oh Ms Harper, a picture is worth a thousand words, and Your Share photo has me drooling on both ends. Thank You also for mentioning the types of materials to select when choosing a good toy. One thing i find works well for cleanup and as a barrier is to always wrap my toys in a condom prior to insertion, usually non-lubricated to protect the material of the toy from breaking down, and then using a nice lube on the outside of the condom to make insertion of toys the size of Your Share a bit easier through the stretching and connection of feeling totally possessed and owned by You when You are able to allow me to feel You balls deep inside my ass. i confess that i don’t need any lube when You allow me to deep throat You that deep. 😉 (i have developed a special affinity for my Lelo)
i do ensure that even though i use a condom during play, i also use a manufacturers antimicrobial cleaner after removing the condom on the toy to keep it ready for next time. Thanks for furthering our education out here in blog land. ;D
I’m glad you appreciate my efforts to educate folks. I want everyone to take excellent care of themselves, because I want to be able to play with you for a nice long time to come. 😉 Using good quality toys helps ensure that every part of you will still be readily available to me in the future.
